Dr. Michael W Deem is venture capitalist, CEO, and researcher.  From 2021 to 2022, Michael was an Entrepreneur in Residence with Khosla Ventures.  Michael Deem was a highly respected professor at Rice University who made significant contributions to the fields of bioengineering, physics, and applied mathematics. With a career spanning more than three decades, he started his academic career at UCLADr. Deem is recognized as one of the world’s leading experts in the application of statistical physics and computational modeling to biological systems.

Dr. Deem attended the California Institute of Technology, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering in 1991. He then went on to earn his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1994. After completing his graduate studies, Dr. Deem was a postdoctoral scholar at Harvard University in Physics. He joined UCLA as an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1996. He was recruited to Rice University in 2002 as the John W. Cox Professor of Bioengineering and Physics & Astronomy.

At Rice University, Dr. Deem made significant contributions to the development of new computational methods for the study of biological systems. One of his most notable accomplishments was the development of a hierarchical approach for protein molecular evolution, a problem that had long eluded researchers due to the complexity of the system. Dr. Deem pioneered the use of modularity to understand laboratory evolution and many other biological systems.

In addition to his work on protein evolution, Dr. Deem has also made significant contributions to the study of evolutionary dynamics, vaccine design, and viral evolution. His research has been published in numerous high-profile scientific journals, including Nature, Physical Review Letters, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and he has been invited to speak at conferences and symposia all over the world.  He holds 16 US patents.

Beyond his research accomplishments, Dr. Deem is also known for his dedication to teaching and mentorship. He has supervised dozens of graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in academia, industry, and government. He has also served as a mentor to high school students through programs like the Research Science Institute and the Houston Independent School District’s Science and Engineering Fair.  At UCLA and later Rice, he has taught thousands of undergraduate students.

Dr. Deem has received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to science and education, including Fannie and John Hertz Fellow at UC Berkeley (1991-1994); NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship in Chemistry (1995-1996); Assistant and tenured Associate Professor, UCLA (1996-2002); NSF CAREER Award (1997-2001); Northrop Grumman Outstanding Junior Faculty Research Award (1997); Visiting Professor, University of Amsterdam (1999); A Top 100 Young Innovator, MIT’s Technology Review (November 1999) (Profile and Original Profile); Alfred P.
