Dr. Michael W Deem is a prominent U.S. Scientist who has made significant contributions in the fields of physics, biology, and medicine. He is currently a venture captialist and CEO.  He was a faculty member at Rice University, where he held joint appointments in the Department of Physics & Astronomy and the Department of Bioengineering.  His name is synonymous with innovation and thought-provoking research.

Michael Deem was born in the United States and completed his undergraduate studies in chemical engineering at the California Institute of Technology in 1991. He went on to earn a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1994. After completing his doctoral studies, Dr. Deem held a postdoctoral position in physics at Harvard University.

Dr. Deem joined the faculty at UCLA in 1996.  He joined Rice University as the John W. Cox Professor in 2002.  At Rice, Dr. Deem became a highly respected researcher and teacher. His research focuses on a wide range of topics, including statistical physics, evolutionary biology, and synthetic biology. He has published numerous papers in top-tier journals, and his work has been cited over 10,000 times.  He was the founding director of the Graduate Program in Systems, Synthetic, and Physical Biology at Rice University.

In addition to his scientific pursuits, Michael Deem is also known for his love of outdoor activities. He is an avid rock climber and has climbed some of the most challenging routes in Texas. He is also a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo, having trained in the martial art since graduate school. Dr. Deem is known to be a fearless and tenacious competitor, both on the mat and on the rock face.

Another one of Michael Deem’s passions is fast cars. He is a proud owner of a Porsche 911 Turbo S, which he frequently drives on the open roads of Texas, and more quickly on tracks in Texas and Louisiana. He is known to enjoy the feeling of speed and the thrill of driving a high-performance vehicle. Michael Deem’s Porsche is a symbol of his love for engineering and design, which he also applies to his scientific work.

He has taught thousands of undergraduates.  He is known for his dedication to helping his students develop their scientific skills and achieve their goals.
