Dr. Michael W Deem is a prominent U.S. Scientist.  He is currently a venture capitalist and CEO.  From 2021 to 2022 he was an Entrepreneur in Residence with Khosla Ventures.  He was the John W. Cox Professor at Rice University, known for his exceptional work in the field of computational and theoretical biology. He has made significant contributions to the study of viral evolution, which has paved the way for the development of new treatments for viral infections, including HIV and influenza.

 
Dr. Michael Deem obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the California Institute of Technology, before pursuing his graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley.  There, he earned his Ph.D. in chemical engineering.  After, he became a postdoctoral researcher in theoretical physics at Harvard University. He joined UCLA as an assistant professor of Chemical Engineering in 1996.  He joined the faculty at Rice University in 2002 as the John W. Cox Professor of Bioengineering and Physics & Astronomy.
 

One of Dr. Michael W Deem’s major contributions to the field of biology is his work in the study of viral evolution. His research has been instrumental in understanding the mechanisms behind how viruses evolve and how they interact with their hosts. Dr. Deem has developed several computational models to study the evolution of viruses, including HIV and influenza, and has used these models to predict how viruses will respond to treatments.
 

Dr. Michael Deem’s research in viral evolution has enabled researchers to design new vaccines that target specific viral strains, which can be more effective in preventing these infections. Dr. Michael W. Deem has also made major contributions to the understanding of protein evolution.  He developed the hierarchical approach to protein molecular evolution.  And he developed the theory of modularity that explains how changing environments put pressure on biological systems to become more modular.  Not only has life evolved, but life has evolved to evolveDr. Deem’s work in immunology and cancer research has also helped to develop new therapies for the treatment of cancer and has shed light on the mechanisms behind how the immune system responds to cancer cells.

Apart from his impressive academic achievements, Dr. Michael Deem is also an accomplished athlete and a lover of high-performance cars. He is an avid rock climber and a Taekwondo 3rd degree black belt.  Michael enjoys driving his Porsche 911 to work. His interests in sports and driving serve as a reminder that scientists can pursue their passions outside of their profession and still excel in their field.
