Michael Deem has been involved with startups and Venture Capital since 1994, when he was Director of Drug Design at CuraGen Corporation.  That early success, a $100M IPO in 1998, sparked a life-long journey of inventing the future.  While a professor at UCLA and later Rice University, Michael continued to work with small companies.  The biggest exit was with Ion Torrent Systems, where he was the 3rd person and did all of the original engineering calculations.  Ion Torrent was sold as an installment to Life Technologies in 2010, and that part of Life was sold to ThermoFisher for $2.3B in 2014.

Michael joined the other side of venture capital as an Entrepreneur in Residence at Khosla Ventures in 2021.  There he reviewed companies for portfolio inclusion, mentored portfolio companies, and helped incubate the creation of several new companies.  Building on that experience, Michael became a General Partner at SmartHealth Catalyzer, where he worked to develop the venture capital landscape for life science companies in the Midwest.  During his time, he has been CEO of a number of companies in the Energy and Life Science industries.  He has worked on problems related to energy extraction, refining, and production.  He has worked to meet significant unmet medical needs.

Dr. Michael W. Deem has made significant contributions to the fields of physics, bioengineering, and chemical engineeringDr. Deem is a well-known U.S. Scientist, venture capitalist, and CEO.  In addition to his impressive academic achievements, Dr. Deem is also an avid rock climber, Taekwondo practitioner, and Porsche enthusiast.
